I also experienced such garbled characters after a few bus errors with the 1.16.3 kernel. It was happening several times,... constantly after treating the OS harsh ( BUS Errors, Illegal instructions etc.) .
You could disable all your OS extensions (ACC, CPX, TSRs...), for a first step. If that fixes the corrupt characters, we know that it was caused by one of these. Then u enable them step by step... to find the bad boy (if any...). If that doesn't help,... do you still have xaaes installation of you previous setup? Maybe you should try to install that version and look if that works better? If it does - we know XaAES is triggering the corrupt character.... and so on ;)
