GEM would be used for programs that you seldom launch from a
conventional command line shell.

Also relative: For me it is simple that the GUI stuff can be easily
distinguished in directory listings because uppercase are "lower" than
lowercase letters. In a decent file manager you would always see these
directories in the upper left corner.
BTW, is there a way to configure that in Thing?

Right, in X it is a mess because it's not consequent. Doesn't say a lot
about the original idea however.
Anyway, I personally don't care too much about executables. But I would
like to see all GUI related header files in subdirectories instead of in
the normale INCLUDE path. This gives more freedom to the programmers of
GEM toolkits, it keeps the include directory smaller (and thus makes the
preprocessor faster) and it is simpler.
