I've never seen an extra directory for core dumps (do you really mean user
process images?).  Crash dumps are supposed to land in /var/adm/crash
or something like this.

This is vendor dependant, and also depends on the taste of the system
administrator.  Most BSDs use /usr/users.

depends on the file system

Depends on whether the kernel supports a proc file system (MiNT does).
Should be /proc in all flavours.
