And it is safe!

What happens, is that fsck tries to get an exclusive lock on partition, ant that is possible only if there are no open files there. If there are any, locking fails and so does fsck.

Actually, you can. That's what I'm forced to do on the FireBee after a
crash since the automatic check at boot time does not work.
