the original questions was regarding repo packages
the above situation would be OK if every one had /c/apps which is not
the case. Even the Pack3D uses D: for its apps
there is no reason why /opt/GEM (or current /usr/GEM) could not be
mapped to C:\APPS, and will probably be useful for quite a few users
Unfortunately I do not have one apps folder, so I dont mind if
packages are installed to a posix tree, as long as (for GEM apps) the
are all in one place, therefore easy to find
note too the posibility of /opt/GEM/HYP and /opt/GEM/RSC etc all nice
short paths where multiple search path are used/needed/useful
