I can't see how the messages in the thread belong together, i.e. that's not a thread tree. According to the PINE FAQ, which I've now read, "Pine doesn't support threading, but a sort by Ordered Subject provides "pseudo" threading of messages by grouping messages with the same subject name together and putting them into date order." That finally answered my question.
