...or /etc/opt/package or /usr/lib (deprecated), yes, for Unix.

Me looks in The Atari Compendium and finds nothing about that.

However, several MiNT and MagiC specific applications rely upon
$HOME but this is a bad idea, IMHO, because users need to have
2 copies of every config file.

Well, here, it works well, because it is desktop-dependant.

Anyways, until GEM apps come with a proper installer that also knows 
how to de-install an application _WITH_ALL_OF_ITS_RELATED_FILES then
we really should stick to using _one_ single folder per application.
