Compiling XDD's and XFS's/Pure-C

I'm running a fairly minimal system so I don't have space for GNU
C. (at least I don't _think_ I've got the HD space, I'd like to install
GNU C/C++) I've got the MiNT 1.09 kernel which I've patched heavily
with addroottimeout() etc... compiled under Pure-C. It runs quickly and
_seems_ stable.

I have had trouble with compiling device drivers and XFS's under
Pure-C though...even using cdecl calling structures, and suppressing the
use of register variables, things start to go wrong after any calls
through kerinfo. (particularly DEBUG calls)

Can anybody help me with this? Do I _have_ to have GNU C? If so
how much space will it burn, and precisely what will I need?
