I think a good start would be to download official kernel snapshot and official (sparemint) cat. If this fails, try the same setup but with http://vincent.riviere.free.fr/soft/m68k-atari-mint/archives/mint/coreutils/ ... there's been some changes to mintlib and I'm pretty sure Vincent's build includes them.
