I have 144MB and I last ran out about a month ago. Even closing as many apps as possible didn't
help.

Oh, wow. What are you doing on that poor computer of yours ;-)

From my user point of view it makes little difference but for the developers
it would make a big difference if lib changes could be implemented in everything
without a massive re-compile effort.

On the other hand, from my developer point of view it takes very little to do the 'massive' re-compilation. Cross compilers are our friends, you can have applications as big as OpenTTD done literally in minutes incl. all dependencies. You just need a nice set of scripts and then 95% of problems are gone, basically only thing you need is to download source code of the new library version and push the button, that's all.
