I have noticed that the shutdown process seems to have changed. I normally close from the Task Mgr and previously all the open windows and apps would close before the shutdown text stuff was written to the screen. Since the update a couple of weeks ago, most windows/apps don't close and the shutdown text is written over the desktop.
This is intentional - when you shutdown you don't need to close any windows, it reduces the risk of the shutdown to hang.
