Hello Peter,

I did also have such an error and I just did an workaround by writing: 
man/man1/*

intead of 

man/*/* 

at the line that invokes gzip! 

You'll have to see if your package also provides other man types than
man1, maybe man8 or something... than add single gzip invocations for each
of the dirs.
