Not in corners, but in areas yes.. and by golly, that's exactly how they
did it! :)

Yep (achieved by grouping keys in such a way that the keys needed during a
certain action are within reach of your fingers), which is why I (and the
majority of other keyboard users, looking at the distribution of keyboard
layouts) want command keys like alt, ctrl and cmd outside my typing area,
other than modifyers involved in typing (being shift and consequently caps
lock).

A nice 3-key jam is nothing compared to loosing your entire text after
hitting ctrl+A instead of A during some fast typing. :o)
