It could be a similar problem some versions of Windows 9x
suffered: The power was shut down so quickly after syncing that
the hard drives sometimes weren't able to flush their own write
cache in time.

Some sleep seconds before the actual poweroff might help in that
case, although a cleaner solution would be to send "flush cache"
commands to all connected hard drives, but is at least a lot
harder to implement than just waiting some seconds ...
