I see.

Now I have to take back my previous statement. If it's a question of running
either VDI or /dev/mouse, it obviously is irrelevant how VDI feels about
it...

Re: your question: it should be possible to write a /dev/mouse which passes
the mouse events down to the VDI. Another reason to take it ouf the kernel
and rewrite it...
