/opt may be fine, /usr/local/somewhere too, /usr/opt is not.

Locally, I use a scheme where local packages are installed in
/usr/local/pkg/<name> (with /usr/local/pkg/<name>/bin etc.), and a shell
script that creates links for a given package that point from /usr/local/bin
to /usr/local/<pkg>/bin etc, and creates an uninstall script that removes
the links.
(the 'pkg' is for historic reasons, since we used that on SunOS before /opt
was common).
I think there is a more sophisticated package that does basically the same,
somewhere in debian or Redhat IIRC.
