?? Why is this a bad idea? And why must users have two copies of their
configuration-files?
I can only think of advantages by using $HOME:
1. You can actually have different setups for different users. I wish Thing
would use it...
2. If you're using several OS'es (on my TT I currently have MiNT/MTOS,
MiNT/N.AES, MiNT/Geneva, Geneva, MagiC and singleTOS) it's easy to use
different configurations for different setups.
3. Easy backup of configuration-files.
If you don't like this, simply do not set $HOME...

Couldn't agree more. Except for the "until"-part, I would prefer to keep
the "one folder per application"-paradigm forever.
